Cómo hacer Asiste a deambular con cinturón de marcha
Assisting a resident to walk with a transfer (gait) belt is scored on safety and on the distance walked. The belt gives you a firm central handhold so you never pull on a fragile arm — put it on right, lock the brakes, and stay on the resident's weak side.
Paso a paso
- 1
Wash your hands, explain the plan, and provide privacy.
- 2
Put non-skid footwear on the resident and fasten it.Crítico
- 3
Lock the wheelchair or bed brakes before the resident stands.Crítico
- 4
Apply the gait belt around the waist, over clothing (never on bare skin), buckle it, and check it is snug — you can slip flat fingers under it but it will not slide up.Crítico
- 5
Ask about dizziness and have the resident scoot forward with both feet flat on the floor.
- 6
Grip the belt with an underhand (palms-up) grasp on both sides; stand with your feet apart, knees bent, back straight, and brace the resident's knees.
- 7
Count '1-2-3' and help the resident stand on the count, then pause and let them get steady before walking.
- 8
Walk slightly behind and to the resident's weak (affected) side, holding the belt, and provide a walker or cane if used.Crítico
- 9
Walk the planned distance (about 10 feet) at the resident's own pace.
- 10
Return, back the resident up until the legs touch the chair, lock the brakes, and lower them into the chair.
- 11
Remove the gait belt, reposition the resident, and put the call light within reach.
- 12
Wash your hands and record the distance walked and how the resident tolerated it.Crítico
Pasos críticos (no los omitas)
- Gait belt goes over clothing and snug — flat fingers fit under it but it will not ride up. On bare skin or left loose is a safety fail.
- Non-skid footwear on before the resident stands.
- Lock the wheelchair/bed brakes before standing and before sitting.
- Use an underhand grip on the belt and walk on the resident's weak side, slightly behind — that is where they are most likely to buckle.
- Walk the required distance and record it — this is a measurement/documentation step.
Errores comunes
- Gripping the belt overhand, or pulling the resident up by the arm instead of the belt.
- Forgetting to lock the brakes before standing or sitting.
- Standing on the strong side instead of the weak side.
- Putting the belt on bare skin or leaving it too loose to hold.
Por qué importa
The gait belt gives you a firm handhold at the resident's center of gravity, so you can steady or catch them without yanking on a fragile arm or shoulder. You stand on the weak side because that leg is the one likely to give out, and an underhand grip lets you push up against the belt to hold the person up if they start to fall.
