Local Delivery / Route Driver — On-the-job English

Study in your language — but on the job you'll speak English. These are the real phrases you actually say for this work, with a note in your language. Not a script; common situations workers report.

Confirming an address and getting a signature

  • I have a delivery for 145 Oak Street — is this the right address?

Confirm you're at the correct address before handing off a package.

  • Can you sign here, please?

Ask the recipient to sign for the delivery.

  • I'll leave it by the door — have a good day.

Explain where you're leaving the package when no one answers.

A customer dispute over a missed or damaged package

  • I'm sorry about that — I can't issue a refund myself, but I'll report it to my dispatcher right now.

Apologize honestly, but explain you personally can't refund — escalate to the employer.

  • Can you tell me exactly what's missing or damaged so I can write it up?

Get precise details for the incident report.

  • Here's the number for customer support — they handle refunds and claims.

Redirect the customer to the correct channel for refunds.

🔴 Traffic accident or injury on your route

  • This is 911 — I've been in an accident at Fifth and Main, there are injuries, please send an ambulance.

Call 911, give the exact location, and state whether anyone is injured.

  • I need to stay here until police and emergency services arrive.

Explain you're waiting at the scene for responders — don't leave.

  • Dispatch, this is an emergency — I need to report an accident on my route right now.

Call your dispatcher immediately after (or while) calling 911.

Dispatch check-in

  • Dispatch, this is route 8 — I'm running about twenty minutes behind because of traffic.

Report a delay and the reason for it.

  • I finished route 8 — all stops complete, heading back to the warehouse.

Report that your route is done and you're returning.

Dock / warehouse check-in

  • I'm here to pick up my route for today — where's my assigned van?

Check in at the warehouse and ask which vehicle is yours.

  • Can you scan me back in? I'm missing three packages from my load.

Report a load discrepancy before you leave the dock.
