Instacart full-service shopper — On-the-job English

Study in your language — but on the job you'll speak English. These are the real phrases you actually say for this work, with a note in your language. Not a script; common situations workers report.

Out-of-stock item → offer a replacement

  • Hi! The store is out of the item you ordered. Want me to replace it with this one, or refund it?

🔴 Message the customer BEFORE substituting — asking first is the #1 thing that protects your tip and rating.

  • Yes, that works. / No, just refund it. / Can you check if they have another brand?

Common customer replies you'll read — reply and act on their choice.

Can't find an item / ask a store employee

  • Excuse me, do you have any of this item in the back?

Ask a store employee if an item is out on the shelf.

  • I looked and asked staff — they're out. I'll refund it unless you'd like a substitute.

Tell the customer you tried before refunding.

Customer not responding to a replacement request

  • I haven't heard back, so I'll refund this item for now — message me if you'd like a substitute.

When there's no reply, refund and keep shopping so you don't fall behind.

Checkout at the store

  • Yes, I'm shopping for Instacart — here's the payment barcode.

The cashier may ask if you're an Instacart shopper; show the app's payment barcode.

  • Do you have a rewards number? / Tap your card here.

Things the cashier may say at checkout.

Delivery handoff / 'leave at door'

  • Hi, I have your Instacart delivery.

Greet the customer when handing off in person.

  • Your groceries are at the front door — have a good day!

For 'leave at door' orders after you drop off and photograph.

Arrival / finding the customer

  • I'm here with your groceries — where would you like them?

Ask where to place the order on arrival.

  • I'm in the parking lot — which building are you in?

    For apartments/complexes, ask which building.
