Study the regulation and practice
Read the Reglamento de Tránsito de la CDMX and the SEMOVI guides on road signs and road safety, then take practice tests.

Start the online procedure
Sign in at licenciapermanente.cdmx.gob.mx with your Llave CDMX account, choose 'Nuevo trámite' and 'Nunca he tramitado una Licencia Tipo A'.

Pass the theory exam
Take the 20-question exam (25-minute timer, up to 2 attempts per day). Score at least 16/20, then pay the fee to receive your permanent Type A licence.

- •The exam has 20 questions from a bank of 200+, covering three areas: the Reglamento de Tránsito, road signs (señalización) and road safety (seguridad vial).
- •You must answer at least 16 of 20 correctly (80%) and you have 25 minutes; you may attempt it up to twice per day.
- •Learn the mobility pyramid (pirámide de movilidad): priority goes to pedestrians, then cyclists, then public transport, then freight, and last private motor vehicles.
- •Recognize signs by shape and colour: preventivas are a yellow diamond, restrictivas a white circle with a red border, and informativas are blue or green.
- •Seat belts are mandatory for all occupants, children must use the proper child restraint system, and using a phone while driving is prohibited.
