🛂 U.S. Citizenship

Which citizenship test do I take?

Most applicants take the English test (reading, writing, speaking) and answer the civics questions in English. If you meet an age and green-card exemption, you may take the civics test in your own language. Enter your details to see which applies to you.

ℹ️ Use your age and years as of the date you file Form N-400 — not necessarily today.

The exemption rules

RuleIf you are…Then…
50/20Age 50+ and 20+ years as a permanent residentEnglish-exempt; civics in your language (all questions)
55/15Age 55+ and 15+ years as a permanent residentEnglish-exempt; civics in your language (all questions)
65/20Age 65+ and 20+ years as a permanent residentEnglish-exempt; civics in your language — only the 20 designated questions

Everyone else: take the English test (reading, writing, speaking) and answer civics in English.

📅 There are two civics versions — the 2025 test and the 2008 test. Which one (and, for 65/20, which 20 questions) applies depends on the date you file Form N-400.

⚠️ This is general information to help you study, not legal advice. USCIS decides your eligibility based on your full situation and your Form N-400 filing date — always confirm at uscis.gov. To take the civics test in another language you must bring your own interpreter who meets USCIS requirements.
