📋 What to Bring

  • Proof of U.S. citizenship or lawful presence

    U.S. passport, birth certificate, or permanent resident card

  • Proof of Texas residency (2 documents)

    Utility bill, bank statement, or lease agreement showing your Texas address

  • Proof of Social Security Number

    Social Security card, W-2 form, or SSA letter showing your full SSN

  • $33 application fee

    Cash, check, money order, or major credit/debit card accepted

  • Completed DL-14A form (if under 18)

    Must be signed by a parent or guardian

    Schedule online (recommended)

    Visit txdps.state.tx.us and book a knowledge test appointment — often faster than walk-in.

    Walk in at a DPS Driver License office

    Arrive early — offices open at 8:00 AM. Wait times vary by location and day of week.

    Check wait times before going

    Visit texas.gov/txapp or the DPS website to see current wait times at your nearest office.

💡 Test Day Tips

  • The test is split into 2 sections: 15 road signs questions and 15 traffic laws questions.
  • You must pass each section separately with at least 70% (11 out of 15).
  • You have 3 attempts before you must pay the fee again and reapply.
  • The test is available in English and Spanish.
  • Read the Texas Driver Handbook (DL-7) thoroughly — all questions come from it.
  • Pay special attention to Texas-specific rules: FM roads, 85 mph limit on SH-130, and the ALR 15-day window.
