Applicants under 18 need parent/guardian consent and must complete CT's Graduated Driver Licensing (driver education + supervised practice hours)

📅 How to Schedule

  1. 1

    Study the manual and practice

Read the Connecticut Driver's Manual and take practice tests covering signs, rules of the road, and safe driving.

  2. 2

    Make a CT DMV appointment

You can take the knowledge test for a learner permit from age 16. CT DMV testing is by appointment; bring your documents and fee.

  3. 3

Pass the vision and knowledge tests

Pass a vision screening, then the 25-question knowledge test (20 to pass). When you pass, you receive your learner permit and enter Connecticut's graduated licensing.

💡 Test Day Tips

  • The Connecticut knowledge test has 25 questions; you must answer 20 correctly (80%) to pass.
  • The legal BAC limit is 0.08 (0.04 for commercial drivers); drivers under 21 have a 0.02 zero-tolerance limit.
  • Connecticut bans all hand-held cell phone use while driving; the fines escalate for repeat offenses.
  • Move Over: slow down and, when safe, move over a lane for stopped emergency, maintenance, and tow vehicles showing flashing lights.
  • You must stop for a stopped school bus with flashing red lights; on an undivided road, traffic in BOTH directions must stop.
