  • NY uses a 6-point ID verification system — make sure your documents add up to at least 6 points before you go.
  • There is no time limit on the knowledge test — read each question carefully.
  • You must be at least 16 years old to apply for a learner permit in New York.
  • The test is available in over 25 languages — ask for your preferred language at the counter.
  • After getting your permit, you must hold it for at least 6 months and log 50 hours of practice driving.
