π What to Bring
- β
Proof of identity & residency
Documents accepted by the Utah DLD (e.g. passport or birth certificate, Social Security number, two proofs of Utah residency); REAL ID needs specific documents
- β
Application & fee
Complete the application and pay the fees at a Utah DLD office (appointments are recommended)
- β
Parent/guardian (if under 18)
Applicants under 18 need parent/guardian consent and must complete Utah's GDL (driver education + 40 hours of supervised practice, 10 at night)
π How to Schedule
- 1
Study the manual and practice
Read the Utah Driver Handbook and take practice tests covering signs, rules of the road, and safe driving.
- 2
Visit a Utah DLD office
You can take the knowledge test for a learner permit from age 15. Schedule an appointment at dld.utah.gov; bring your documents and fee.
- 3
Pass the vision and knowledge tests
Pass a vision screening, then the 50-question knowledge test (40 to pass). When you pass, you receive your learner permit and enter Utah's graduated licensing.
π‘ Test Day Tips
- β’The Utah knowledge test has 50 questions; you must answer 40 correctly (80%) to pass.
- β’Utah's legal BAC limit is 0.05 β the lowest in the nation (0.04 for commercial drivers); drivers under 21 must have 'not a drop' (zero) of alcohol.
- β’Utah allows speeds up to 80 mph on some rural interstates; the Basic Speed Rule still requires a safe speed for conditions.
- β’Move Over: slow down and, when safe, move over a lane for stopped emergency, maintenance, and tow vehicles showing flashing lights.
- β’You must stop for a stopped school bus with flashing red lights; on an undivided road, traffic in BOTH directions must stop.
